Dunlop Motorcycle Tires

Dunlop is a motorcycle tire brand in North America that is now owned by Sumitomo Rubber USA, LLC after acquiring it from the Goodyear Rubber Company back in 2015. The company was originally founded in 1889 in England after the founder John Boyd Dunlop discovered a way to develop an inflatable tire for his son’s tricycle a couple of years earlier. His company’s early beginnings were met with a bumpy ride at first, especially with the court’s later cancelation of their original pneumatic tire patent, but, nevertheless, Dunlop persevered and is now the fifth oldest major existing tire company in the world and continues to innovate to consistently manufacture some of the most remarkable and outstanding motorcycle tires in the Powersports industry.

In 1923, the company expanded its operations to the United States by moving to Tonawanda in the Buffalo Niagara region of New York. And to this day, Dunlop is the only major manufacturer left that is still producing tires for motorcycles in the USA from that same original plant. Not only are they the only tire manufacturer still left here, but Dunlop also is the largest supplier of O.E.M. and replacement motorcycle tires sold in the United States.

Dunlop’s passion for excellence has propelled the company to continually set the standards and benchmarks in the industry that all the other companies strive to achieve. Dunlop has a long history of revolutionizing the tire industry on account of their demanding corporate principles and stringent specifications to create only the best products possible to consistently meet industry’s ever-demanding needs. And because of that, consumers are confident that they can always count on this top-notched brand for delivering a high quality, reliable, and trustworthy product.

Dunlop makes all different types of tires for motorcycles and scooters. Uniqueness during the tire’s manufacturing process combines a blend of over 30 types of rubber to create their superior products. Dunlop’s commitment to high-quality control ensures that all the finished tires are scrutinized for any imperfections. For instance, each tire must also undergo an x-ray scanning process to detect any possible weaknesses. No tire can ever be shipped out for sale without first passing these rigorous inspections.

Technology and innovation are what drives this company. Dunlop is actually known for many firsts in the industry. For instance, they were the first to make such things as the pneumatic tire in 1888 and the more modern 20-inch off-road front tire. They were also the first to use Kevlar belts in their tires, and they pioneered the modern-day OEM radial street tire.

With its team of engineers and designers across North America, Europe, and Japan, Dunlop has a vast global Research & Development operation that puts all of its innovations to the toughest test of all – racing. Dunlop tires have actually been winning races ever since May 18, 1889, when Willie Hume beat out the competition in a Belfast cycling event by winning four out of the five days of races using the very pneumatic tire design that was invented the previous year by John Boyd Dunlop, so they have a long history in discovering what it takes to be a winner. In fact, Dunlop still claims many absolute speed tests to this day and continues to break records. Dunlop is also the most successful tire brand in the history of Le Mans 24 Hours and the Isle of Man TT Endurance Racing field. With that kind of expertise, it’s not surprising that so much useful technology cascades down to the products that Dunlop makes commercially available to the everyday consumer.

Some of the current technologies and innovations that have transpired from all that intense testing and research from Dunlop over the years that eventually made its way over to today’s motorcycle tire marketplace include ones such as: low profile tire shapes, radial constructions, directional and constant curve tread designs, aramid casing materials, Multi-Tread (MT) technology, Jointless Tread (JLT) technology, Jointless Belt (JLB) Construction, NTEC Pressure Adjustment System, Advanced Apex Design (AAD), Carcass Tension Control System (CTCS), Progressive Cornering Block Technology (PCBT), Multiple Block Distribution (MBD), Heat Control Technology (HCT), Bead Profile, Fine Carbon, Race Type Fine Carbon, Variable Block Technology, Interconnecting Groove Thread, Camber Thrust Tuning, High Elongation Steel JLB, High Silica Content, 4 Season Technology, NTEC Road & Track, Slim Bean Apex, Slim High Bead Apex, Variable Tension Technology, Speed Vent Thread, Rayon Ply Casing, Dynamic Front Formula, Cross Groove Tread, and so many more.
